The piston together with the Pistonhead provides the air pressure that is moved towards the bb, so that it is fired.
There are several pistons including Plastic pistons made of the strong material Polycarbonate. Advantage of this piston is that they are light and in case of wear and tear they don't immediately break your gears because the Polycarbonate teeth get broken first instead of your gears.
Then you have the pistons with full steel teeth. Are slightly heavier than the Polycarbonate pistons and because the teeth are made of metal they can also damage the gears when they wear out.
Half teeth pistons are for special builds and is usually used for High Torque builds.
